Join me in supporting real change. With your help we can ensure families understand the importance of reading aloud.
My earliest and sustaining memories are of reading books with loved ones when I was very young. This love of books is always with me, and I was fortunate to pass this love of reading to my three children. Your gift will help children and families know what a gift reading together is and the impact just a few minutes a day can have on a child's sense of security and comfort, as well as building their brain for learning when they go to school.
Reading with young children has so many benefits, especially in today's world. And Reach Out and Read pediatricians and medical providers are trained to model reading with young children, answer questions, and give families a book to take home and read together.
What ROR does for the clinic and families: Early exposure to language and books has so many benefits for kids, and Reach Out and Read Iowa helps expand that opportunity to more families by distributing and modeling books through their well-child visits with their primary care providers. Many of those families are more at risk of future school failure, and it’s a great opportunity to help support those kids when they are young.
My program spotlight is Eastern Iowa Community Health Center, a community health center located in Cedar Rapids serving over 1,500 children and families, with 50% of the families served being African American, 40% White, and 10% Latino, Asian, and other ethnicities. If my team raises the most money, they will receive a $1,500 gift certificate for books, ensuring that children and families will continue to get the books they needs. All our participating clinics will receive a box of brand new books!
ROR is critical to Eastern Iowa Community Health Center, as many of parents struggle to find the time and resources to build at home libraries. This program is instrumental in increasing patients' exposure to books and words.
